Oregon Chapter, NASW Sponsors"Do We Have an Understanding? Communication Styles in Clinical Practice " June 27, 2008 - presented by Catherine Beckett, LCSW On June 27, 2008, Catherine Beckett, will present "Do We Have an Understanding? Communication Styles in Clinical Practice" from 9-12:15 (registration at 8:30) in 1702 Lorenzen, Lorenzen Center, Legacy Emanuel Hospital, 2801N Gantenbein, Portland. This conference is approved for 3 CE hours. (Call NASW at 503-452-8420 with questions.) This highly active and interactive workshop will examine communication styles on five different axes (internal vs. external process, direct vs. indirect, linear vs. circular, attached vs. detached, and relational vs. intellectual confrontation). Activities will examine cultural and gender influences, and will teach participants to identify different styles and assess where their own style sits along each axis. Research findings regarding how heavily we rely on non-verbal expression to interpret communication will also be presented, as well as the implications of these findings for professional communication in a technological age. Dialogue between various styles will enhance participants' understanding of both their own styles and others, and increase their skills in working effectively with different styles. |
